Sizing a mini-split for a Laramie County home starts with one question: how hard does the compressor have to work when it does run. Homes in Laramie County, WY run cooling in a single month of the year, July. A compressor that cycles through the full July heat load on an undersized or poorly charged system will register that strain in refrigerant pressure, contact wear, and coil condition long before the next summer arrives. Because the cooling demand is packed into a single month, a contractor has to get the load calculation right the first time. There is no gradual ramp-up across successive months to catch an installation error before the peak hits.

Electrical service in much of this county was sized for appliance loads that looked nothing like what a mini-split compressor draws today. Half the homes in Laramie County, Wyoming were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a ductless installation here checks the panel before pricing anything else, because a breaker slot and a dedicated circuit at the right amperage are not guaranteed in a house of this vintage. If the service panel is already at capacity, that work gets priced and permitted separately, and it changes the project scope before a single line set is run.

What a Mini-split Installation Covers in Your Home

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned, where it draws in room air and delivers treated air back out. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Together, these two units are the core of what a contractor puts in place.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line exits the indoor unit and routes moisture outside. The outdoor unit also connects to a dedicated electrical circuit at the disconnect box mounted near it.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the conditions in your specific home.
