Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Two-story house with beige horizontal siding, gray shingled gable roofs and a covered front entry, with an outdoor air conditioning unit beside it and a partly dry grass lawn in front under a clear blue sky.

Sizing a mini-split for this house takes more from the load calculation than from the calendar. Homes in Weston County, WY run cooling about two months a year, from July through August. The compressor spends most of the year off, which sounds easy on equipment but works against it: a refrigerant charge that was set wrong at installation, or a unit spec'd too small for the room, will not reveal itself gradually. It reveals itself the first July afternoon the system runs hard, which is also when every other contractor in the county is booked. A licensed installer who sizes to the actual cooling load of this house removes that single point of failure.

Electrical service panels in much of this county's housing stock were designed around loads that predate what a mini-split draws today. Half the homes in Weston County, Wyoming were built in 1974 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor scoping an installation here checks the panel before the wall or the window placement, because undersized service is what stops a job, and it has to be resolved before anything else gets quoted.

What a Mini-split Installation Covers in Your Home

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house with two rooms, each with a wall-mounted indoor air conditioning unit connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, delivering conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or on a bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and coil that do the mechanical work of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall, carrying the connection that lets the indoor and outdoor sides work together. A condensate drain line and the control wiring run alongside it, and a wall-mounted thermostat or remote receiver gives the occupant control over the indoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how the components are positioned and routed in your specific home.

Severe Weather Events in Weston County

Weather patterns in Weston County put real demands on heating and cooling equipment over the course of a year. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions handles that workload differently than one spec'd for a milder climate.
